Final South Island Itinerary

We have only a short time left on the South Island of New Zealand before we spend about four weeks on the North Island… then we fly home to Delaware in early June. While a few particulars about the North Island roadie we’re planning are still in the works, I can share our upcoming “farewell South Island tour” route now.

Friday, 22 April: pack up the car, vacate our Christchurch house, turn in keys to the rental manager. Drive to Lake Tekapo, home of a dark sky reserve and the St John Observatory.

Saturday 23 April: Visit Aoraki/Mount Cook! This will be the kids’ first up-close encounter with the tallest mountain in NZ, which James and I visited in March.

Sunday 24 April: Drive south from Twizel through the Otago region, ending up in Dunedin on the Otago Peninsula.

Sunday 24 April through Thursday 28 April: Do fun things around Dunedin!

Thursday 28 April: drive up the coast, crashing for one night with friends in Christchurch to break up the drive.

Friday 29 April: continue north from Christchurch up to the Marlborough Sounds

Friday 29 April through Monday 2 May: Explore the Marlborough Sounds region, particularly Picton, Havelock, and the walking tracks near the bach we’re renting.

Monday 2 May: Depart the South Island to take the ferry over to Wellington!!
