In just a couple weeks, we will be moving–all five of us–from the mid-Atlantic to the South Island of New Zealand. James is a professor and has earned a year’s sabbatical. Before we had kids (back in 2004), the two of us took a 19-day trip to the beautiful country of New Zealand and we loved it so much that we’ve been dreaming about returning ever since.
Fast forward 11 years, and here we are, finally packing for the trip of a lifetime. This time, however, we aren’t going for a few weeks–we’ll be there for 8 months!
And we’re not a couple anymore; we’re a full-fledged family. Evelyn (11 years old), Charlotte (8.5 years old), and Calvin (4.5 years old) will have to carry their own bags (just as they have on other major trips we’ve taken). This is the longest we’ll live in another country, and we all have our own dreams, goals, and fears about the upcoming move.
There are so many details to attend to, people to say goodbye to, and things to pack, but the excitement is building as the weeks dwindle.
Over the next couple weeks before we leave, all five of us will share thoughts about leaving home and embarking on this new adventure. We’ll also share details about how we planned the trip and updates about the final preparations for New Zealand.
